Automotive News is reporting that Mitsubishi is mulling the idea of putting petrol power in charge of propulsion of some i models, giving dealers a higher volume line that can compete with the Smart Fortwo. The automaker already sells a gasoline powered i in Europe, but Mitsubishi Motors North America VP John Koenig reportedly told AN that the Euro model’s turbocharged 660cc motor would likely be swapped out for the same Mitsubishi-sourced 1.0-liter three-cylinder model that powers the Smart.

If Koenig wants to bring the gas-powered i to the States, he estimates that he’ll have to prove that dealers can sell 1,000 models per month in order to get the parent company to pull the trigger. That sounds doable to us considering Smart sold 20,000 Fortwo’s in the first 10 months of production – in spite of the fact that the unique-looking micro mini is premium-priced and only has two seats. The i can comfortably seat four and it can probably be sold for close to the Fortwo’s $11,990 starting price. The typical i sells in more small car tolerant Europe for $16,000.

Along with the introduction of the rest of the 2010 Outlander facelift range, Mitsubishi’s U.S. division also uncovered the top-of-the-line GT model which is based on the New York Show Outlander GT prototype that previewed the redesigned model earlier this year. And while Mitsubishi didn’t stick with the prototype’s lower exterior trim finish, 19-inch O.Z. alloys, aluminum roof finish and the specific three-spoke steering wheel, what it did keep on the production GT is a version of the Lancer EVO X’s S-AWC or Super All-Wheel Control system.

The S-AWC system uses an active front limited-slip differential and an electronically controlled four-wheel drive coupling to prevent wheel slip between front to rear and side-to-side thus improving handling, traction and stability.

The 2010 Outlander GT also gets 18-inch alloy wheels, enhanced interior trim with leather seats and an available full leather treatment for the dashboard, sport seats, alloy pedals, a multi color 3.5-inch LCD between the gauges, a sunroof and an upgraded 710-watt Rockford Fosgate audio system.

Just like the 2010 Outlander XLS, the GT benefits from the tweaked 3.0-liter V6 engine that gets a 10-horsepower bump for 2010, now producing 230HP at 6,250 rpm and 204 lb-ft of peak torque at 4,000 rpm. Power is transfered to the wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission with steering wheel paddle shifters.

The new Outlander GT is priced in the U.S. from $29,250 (excluding destination and handling fees).

Mitsubishi Company intends to present a new Concept-cX model at the upcoming International Motor Show in Frankfurt. This is a new generation of compact SUV (SUV), which seeks to maintain a balance between environmental and everyday practical use.

Concept-cX is equipped with new Euro 5 diesel engine with the capacity of 1.8 Litres and with a high efficiency. The newest sports transmission is also installed on the car.

Force channel provides a quick job with excellent fuel economy and very low emissions. Among the new environmental technologies introduced in the Concept-cX it is possible to note the widespread use for the interior “neat” material made from their own so-called “Green plastics” made from bamboo and other resins of vegetable origin.

Designers did a great job, giving the car a purposeful and which is not less important, functional form, using a dynamic wedge shape and large tires. The front of the Mitsubishi Concept-cX is not the typical form for its class, it seemed to be cut under the “upside” bias, which is typical for more American muscle car (remember at least Ford Mustang). The cut off “nose” grille is crowned by a trapezoidal shape, which makes the SUV more aggressive. In general, the designers did a good job on the design of the car. Compact form of Concept-cX makes it extremely manoeuvrable in city driving, and the high driver’s seat provides excellent visibility. Ease of use is increased due to the split tailgate borrowed from the Outlander.

1.8-liter clean diesel engine with variable geometry (VG), turbocharger for optimum boost control, diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) and diesel particulate filter (DPF) in the exhaust system fully complies with the level of emissions set by European standards, Euro 5.

The power supply is connected to the new sports programs, designed specifically for superior efficiency of energy transfer, which allows excellent fuel economy and significantly reduces emissions.

Concept-cX also uses an electronically controlled 4WD system and large tires (225/45R19), to enhance the driving characteristics both on tarmac and off-roads.

The concept car called PX-MiEV is scheduled to be shown by Mitsubishi at International Motor Show in Tokyo. The car is a hybrid power plant of its own design of Mitsubishi and many original technical solutions.

Mitsubishi Motors extended details on the new product, which intend to show at the Tokyo Motor Show. SUV PX-MiEV is a further development of electric car and is gradually enforced by the company, but, being a hybrid, has a considerable chance for serial production, albeit in much altered form.

Hybrid propulsion system, which Mitsubishi PX-MiEV is equipped with, is built on the original scheme. There are two electric engines: they are installed in the front and rear of the car and rotate, respectively, for the front and rear axle.

In addition, the composition of the set also includes a 1.6-liter petrol engine which, depending on specific conditions, can be used for its intended purpose, transferring torque to the front axle, or to act as an electric generator, recharging batteries, feeding both electric engines. The car is equipped with the S-AWC all-wheel drive control system, adapted to work with a hybrid setup, which is already familiar to us from the production models.

The company does not lead indicators of total power of the hybrid installation, planning to release the detailed specifications at the time of the official presentation at the motor show.

Speaking about the design of its development, Mitsubishi claims that considerable attention was paid to aerodynamics, even taking into account the fact that it is an SUV. The car manufacturer tried to raise fuel economy: the company claims that on one liter of fuel PX-MiEV is able to overcome 50 km.

However, it is unspecified, on what cycle of motion is this indicator achieved.

In parallel with the improvement of the technical component, the developers take care of interior, trying to make it cozy, despite rather brutal design.

Japanese Mitsubishi Motors started the serial production of electric i MiEV. The vehicle can be charged from a home outlet. Four door small hatchback, which is fitted with efficient lithium ion batteries, can reach a speed up to 130 km/h and the battery is able to overcome about 160 km.

With the help of quick-charging device the “refuel” of i MiEV takes just about half an hour. In the home charging using a network of 200 will require a 7 hours, while in Japan, where the stress in the household electric system is 100 V, this time will be doubled reaching up to 14 hours.

Taking into account government subsidies for environmentally friendly electric cars cost for the Mitsubishi all electric car in Japan is expected to be about 30 thousand dollars.

First, the new vehicle will be sold in the UK and Hong Kong, where right drive cars are used. i MiEV with the left drive is expected to appear in European market in late 2010 and soon after in the United States.
